After Ten Games…

Posted: October 23, 2014 in Whalers

Hard to believe it, but ten games are already in the books for the Whalers 25th season in the OHL. Let’s take a look at how our Whalers are doing.

Coming off of a rebuilding season this team looked to have growth and much more potential than last year’s squad. However to cannot tell that by the numbers in the win/loss column. Last year at this time the Whalers were looking at a 4-6-0-0 record.

This year? It’s a slightly improved 4-5-1-0. Unlike last year where there was a big race for points between Guelph, London and Erie, that race is just down to Erie and the Soo. Looking at the West Division the Whalers, Spirit and the Sting all have the same record of 4-5-1-0 for 9 points.

Positives:

  • The Whalers have been scoring more and have been getting on the board first in seven out of the first ten games.
  • The team is also using their speed to their advantage.
  • The transition of Head Coach and GM seems to have been as smooth as it could have been so far.
  • With a 2-0-1-0 record, the Whalers have yet to not earn a point when they play at home.

Negatives:

  • We have not been able to see Sonny Milano in a Whalers uniform since preseason. Here’s hoping we see him on the ice sooner rather than later because…
  • The Whalers defense has taken a hit as Mitch Jones and Gianluca Curcuruto have both been suspended.
  • Despite scoring first in seven games, the Whalers have 2-4-1 record when scoring first.
  • The Whalers need to be better on the road, posting a 2-5 record in 7 road games.

Right now it could be worse for the Whalers, and let’s not kid ourselves, losing two d-men for eight and twelve games respectively is going to make for a tough go coming into the next set of ten games, but let us see what the Whalers can do.

The Whalers are on the road on Thursday finishing a 4 game road trip and then return home to host the Steelheads and the Rangers this weekend.
