Ice Cuttings: OA Edition

Mitchell Heard warms up for the Lake Erie Monsters.

The Whalers have one OA spot on the roster for this season and before Vellucci attempts to fill that position via trade, we must wait to see if anyone might get sent back down from the AHL. This happened last year with Jamie Devane when he got sent down from the Toronto Marlies. With another NHL lockout, there might be fewer spots open in the AHL then there would have been had there not been a lock out, but all player are trying to earn a spot on their respective AHL rosters.

This year we are looking at four Whalers hoping to move on to the AHL. Heard is with the Lake Erie Monsters, Levi is with the Checkers was with the Checkers, and Wedgewood is with the Albany Devils. Miller, while not an OA is currently with the Connecticut Whale.

Colin MacDonald and Alex Aleardi make up two out of the three OA spots on the Whalers roster. Who will take that OA spot and how will it help the Whalers this season?

Levi just got sent back to the Whalers (and former captain Beau Schmitz got sent down to the ECHL) and looks to fill that last spot. After recording a career high thirty points and a plus 20 in the plus/minus rating, he is poised to sure up the defensive core of this team.

Heard is playing with the Lake Erie Monsters and looks like he will be staying. He played against the Grand Rapids Griffins at Yost Arena this past Sunday night and he saw a lot of ice time. I personally thought that he would be sent back until I saw him play with the Monsters. He was out there on the penalty kill and the power play. He even had a dandy of a fight.

I find it hard to believe that he will be sent back to Plymouth. I could be proven wrong. I never said I was always right, but I think Lake Erie wants to keep him.

Finally it comes down to fan favorite and all around good guy Scott Wedgewood. He is battling with three other tenders for a spot with Albany and has been playing some very good hockey.

If Scott comes back, that would push Mahalak back to the back up position and move Corbin down to the third spot. I again doubt that he is coming back to Plymouth either.

I think Levi coming back will be the best thing for the Whalers, it fits a need skill wise where we were otherwise a little short. A defense of Levi, Carrick, Crombeen, Malysa, and Curcuruto? I’ll take it any day.
