The first sign that a new OHL season is upon us is the reopening of the trade window. Plymouth wasted no time as they acquired defenseman Gianluca Curcuruto from the Soo for 17-year-old left wing Mitchell Dempsey and 16-year center Dylan Mascarin. This deal was apparently in the works for some time as reported by Sean Lafortune.

What’s Being Said:

“With three defensemen leaving from last year’s team, we were looking to add more experience to our defense, Curcuruto is a young veteran who will help.” – Whalers Coach & GM Mike Vellucci

“This was a move made for us to deal from a position of strength – defence – in an attempt to bolster our cadre of forwards. It is a pure hockey trade where both clubs acquire pieces they feel they will need now and in the future.Gianluca was a model player for us off ice – both academically and in the community. We wish him nothing but continued success in Plymouth. ” – Soo GM Kyle Dubas

Dempsey played in 34 regular season games (1G, 4A, -8) and  5 playoff games last season and Mascarin will now start his rookie year with the Hounds. Curcuruto has played two seasons in the Soo and has played for a total of 119 games (4G, 38A, -15) and was drafted in the seventh round (182ndoverall) by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2012 National Hockey League Entry Draft.

The three defensemen leaving the blue line for the Whalers this past off season are Schmitz, Trutmann, and Levi. This trade is good for both sides. It does replace some of the skill lost this off season for the Whalers, and sending Dempsey to the Soo will allow him to see more ice time then he would with the Whalers.

While the players are excited for the new chapter in their playing careers, I think we all will miss Dempsey’s sick moves on the ice.
